The first time I saw a naturopath, he told me that when recovering from a chronic illness, as the body heals, one re-experiences all the symptoms in the reverse order of how they appeared when the chronic illness first set in. It was part of the homeopathic principle of healing from the inside out. As an illness progresses it goes deeper into the body. As the body heals it pushes the illness back out.
I was thinking about that yesterday as I lay in bed, once again knocked out by my menses. In the first months after I got the mystery flu in 2001 that began all the tick-borne illness symptoms, my menses became symptomatic for the first time in years. I started having PMS, mostly mild to moderate cramps in advance of my period. Then I started getting really tired on the first day of my period. Then by October, I had diarrhea on the first day, accompanied by syncope at the local grocery store. (Incidentally, I developed a “congenital” valve defect in my heart that day.)
In the following months, things got worse, to the point that I couldn’t work on the first day of my period. I would vomit, have diarrhea, weakness in my legs, chills, shakes, sweats, somnolence, low blood pressure. I couldn’t stand up for 2-6 hours that day. I was living in New Haven at the time and could usually get someone to drive me home from work as soon as I realized I was in trouble. By the time things were really bad, I had already moved to NYC. I spent more than one day on the floor of the bathroom at my office.
Over these past few years, I finally found a few doctors, and a naturopath, who realized the connection between Lyme Disease (and Bartonella & Babesia), insulin resistance and my menstrual problems. I’ve been taking Metformin for two and a half years and slowly, sporadically, my menses have been less horrendous. I think part of it was correcting the insulin resistance, and the other part has been reducing my infection and toxin loads.
Even though I was out of it yesterday, even though I spent most of the day sleeping or at least horizontal, even though I was lightheaded from low blood pressure, even though I had 5 days of PMS, I was happy to not have all the other symptoms this month. I think I’m working my way back out of this mess.

Detox
Fasting mostly. I couldn’t even drink water most of the day.
Body
This new version of my menses has lots of digestive distress. I spent most of the day nauseated and terrified that if I drank anything or ate anything I would vomit. So I occasionally sipped warm water or vegetable broth. By 8pm I got hungry and had some oatmeal and cheese. (I go with my cravings on such days.)
My pain level was pretty high, and not just abdominal cramps. I had a fair amount of joint and back pain. And I had a headache on and off all day.
I slept a lot during the day, rested the rest of the day, slept a lot at night.

Detox
I haven’t been in the mood to take baths this winter. But I remembered that soaking my feet in epsom salt is a good way to support the detox process. I thought of it when I discovered a blister on my big toe…
- skin brushing
- rest
- soaking my feet in epsom salt and hot water
Body
I’ve had more energy and been in a better mood today. I saw a friend and made a few phone calls. But I’ve remained tired, from my period, and I find I have a moderate headache tonight. My overall pain level is higher, though most of the aches and pains around my body are of a short duration.
